Differentiated Math Instruction:
Using Rich Problems to Reach All Learners

Rich problems invite a variety of solution strategies. They provide an effective vehicle for accommodating a range of levels and learning styles. In this six-week online course participants will explore strategies for using problem solving to build skills and concepts for struggling students and to provide challenge for those who soar. Participants should expect to spend 3-5 hrs per week on the course.

This moderated course will be led by Claire Mead, FunPoW Coordinator. It will take place online using Epsilen, as part of the NY Times Knowledge Network. The only technical requirements are a web browser and Internet access.

Who: Teachers of grades 3-8 with classroom accounts.

Participation requires Problem of the Week membership at the Class level or higher. Non-members or Individual Teacher members may purchase the necessary access at a discounted rate.

When:

February 11 - March 24, 2010
Registration closes at 5 pm EDT on Friday, February 5, 2010.

Credit: All individuals who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate indicating that they have completed 15 hours of professional development. This is equivalent to 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Cost:
  $149 - for current members at Class level or higher
  $174 - for non-members (course plus Class Membership access during the six week course)
  $298 - for non-members (course plus Class Membership access through June 30, 2010)

• Learn how rich problems help teachers differentiate instruction for learners with diverse developmental levels and learning styles.
• Discuss how problem analysis enables teachers to take better advantage of a problem's potential.
• Develop strategies for adapting problems to make them more accessible or more challenging.
• Learn management strategies that allow all children to grow.
• Explore ways in which assessment of problem solving can inform instructional decisions.
